New Year Resolutions

NList of things to achieve.
1. Get a first.
2. Lose two stone
3. Make this blog more discursive.
4. Get a part time job so I can pay for going Euro railing and a trip to Japan.
5. Win the internal mooting competition.

All of which could be quite achievable.. if only I wasn't studying jurisprudence!

Hope you all had a very nice Christmas and wish you all the best in 2009!

Andro is quite right - you can do it!
Shall we form our own online dieting club ?! I am about to embark upon the truly HIDEOUS Atkins Diet for a fortnight, see if I can shift those pounds!!

Atkins eek!
Apparently its only supposed to teach you to eat less cahbs!!
One of the main reasons I am putting on weight and may have rather embarrassingly broken my chair by leaning over thereby causing a chair leg to buckle under the pressure, is that I just simply don't do any exercise at all! I have a couple of Martial Arts DVDs that I am going to give a whirl, as I do love Martial Arts, and want to get fit in the process!!

I've decided that I am going to work my butt off this term only have till the beginning of April left for actual teaching!! Ahh!!

Don't do Atkins, Lost or Minx!

It will make you grumpy no end. Cut down on carbs, by all means - quite drastically if you like, but not to the extent of the first 2 weeks in Atkins. It will be a hellish 2 weeks. There's only so much pleasure in spreading a stick of butter on a steak...!

If you cut out all white carbs (white sugar, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes- although the last two aren't as bad) should shift some weight there. And much healthier for you - the Atkins puts a lot of pressure on your kidneys etc.

I want to lose a stone too. But when studying/revising the only thing that will get me to sit down and do any work is to have constant tea/ biccie breaks!

Celery sticks are not enough to get you through having to deal with Jurisprudence. Hart and Dworking *shudder*! Good luck with your goals, Lost :)

I loved Jurisprudence...does that make me wierd?

Happy New Year, all the best for 2009!

Hm - is the more old fashioned Scarsdale Diet a bit better than Atkins? At least SD allows you to eat bread ( wholemeal, no spread - bleagh) and have coffee and tea with skimmed milk.... *sigh* What I wouldnt give for an ENORMOUS Chip Butty, with REALLY hot chips covered in salt and vinegar and JAMMED between two DOORSTEPS of Bread DRIPPING with salted Welsh butter.... I am going MAD, I tell you MAD! And I've only been on a low carb diet for four days!!!!

I don't know much about the SD diet - but knows that Atkins basically works by:

- killing your love of food/ life (!)
- reducing calorie intake. You can only eat so much steak, and protein is more filling. We can eat plateful after plateful of pasta, but not platefuls of boiled eggs, or kilos of cheese.

It's only possible to lose 1-2 pounds of fat a week- anything about that is muscle/ glycogen and water loss. The glycogen/water will get replenished (as it's a short term store of sugar in solution in your muscles and liver) soon as you increase calories again, and muscle loss is bad because it lowers your metabolism.

So losing more then 2 pounds a week, unless you're mega overweight is a bad thing long term.

I tried to go on Atkins when it first came out, when I was a much younger Girl - didn't last terribly long given I don't really eat meat. Which left me with the tasty options of canned tuna, cheese, and a few beans for 2 weeks. Yummy.

Dreaming of bread - bad! Chip butties....*homer-esque drool*.

Sorry for hijacking your wall, LLLS!

V interesting article here for anyone interested in food and nutrition:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/28/magazine/28nutritionism.t.html

And www.whfoods.org - really good informative website which promotes healthy foods. They basically advise you to eat a wide variety of fruit, veg, and whole grains and suggest avoiding all the whites (flour, fat, sugar) and enjoying a varied low fat diet.

It's changed the way I eat. (although I think low fat is a con).
